After a very successful debut run this year on Netflix and ushering in the first of many new television properties the streaming service provider and Marvel plan to debut within the next few years, Marvel’s Daredevil is indeed returning for a second helping next year, as Season 2 is in the beginning stages of production. Now the official logo for the season has been revealed showing the next challenge the “Man Without Fear” must contend with… One that involves punishment and a rain of bullets.
In what will certainly be pleasant news to longtime viewers and fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead, actor Jon Bernthal has been officially cast by Marvel Studios to play the part of Frank Castle… Better known to comic book readers as “The Punisher“! This will mark Bernthal’s second comic book based role in Television, as he previously played Shane Walsh – the best friend tuned unhinged ally of Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead, which in itself is based on the long running post-apocalyptic zombie comic book series of the same name written by Robert Kirkman.
Featured on Marvel.com, Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb had this to say about the casting:
“Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences. Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”
Besides being famously known for playing Shane for the first two seasons of TWD, Bernthal’s credentials also extend to other great roles and appearances. He played the lead in the short-lived noir crime drama “Mob City” (which was created by Frank Darabont, the man who developed The Walking Dead TV Series), as well as starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street”.
Previously played by the likes of Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane, and Ray Stevenson in film, Bernthal steps into the shoes of Frank Castle/ The Punisher for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the rights for the character reverted back to Marvel. A street-based vigilante who uses lethal force and tactics to fight criminals, Castle is a war veteran who loses his entire family to the mob in a shootout. Surviving the ordeal, he emerges with a sole purpose in mind – to punish the evil and corrupt by using his vast training and martial arts skills, adopting the codename of “The Punisher“.
Daredevil Season 2 will premiere sometime in 2016.
