From the director that gave us Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, Shinichirō Watanabe and Sony Picture Japan just dropped a major announcement in a video teaser of an upcoming Blade Runner Project in the form of an anime short film. Checkout the Blade Runner Black Out 2022 video here..
The video showcases a combination of clips from the original blade runner flick and some behind-the-scenes footage of the film and its production staff working on it. Shinichirō Watanabe said Blade Runner is the film that’s had the most influence on him. In tandem with Watanabe on the project is Shuko Murase with regards to character designs and animation.
Set to take place a few years after the 1st movie, the story takes place on the west coast of the US where a power failure occurred. So it’s an in between story in the middle of the film’s Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049.
Since this project is said to be a prelude to Blade Runner 2049 we assume that the project will be done before the film’s October release, well hopefully.
