Pixar’s new movie Lightyear is releasing in cinemas soon, and those who watch it in IMAX theaters will be in for a treat.
As confirmed in by Pixar in a press conference, Lightyear features around 30 minutes of IMAX formatted scenes. This means for several sequences, Lightyear will have a taller 1.43:1 aspect ratio if you watch it in select IMAX theaters, making it the first animated movie to get the full IMAX treatment.
Meanwhile, if you watch it in a standard IMAX theater (with a 1.90:1 screen) as I did, you’ll still be able to enjoy a taller aspect ratio in several scenes.
Here’s a sample of what you can expect to see in the said scenes:
Meanwhile, this is how the rest of the movie will look in an IMAX theater as the film has a standard 2.39:1 aspect ratio.
It might seem like a small change, but I found it to be quite noticeable, and it personally enhanced the space sequences.
While we don’t have an image of Lightyear in the 1.43:1 aspect ratio, here’s a sample of what to expect if you are lucky enough to live near an IMAX theater with the large square screen.
Of course, Lightyear is an animated film, so all of these scenes with the IMAX aspect ratio was all done virtually. And while you might think that the scenes were simply cropped from the standard widescreen cut, Pixar confirmed that they weren’t.
Lightyear releases in Philippine cinemas tomorrow, June 15.
