While it’s possible to edit photos and videos now on a phone, any serious content creator still needs a PC or laptop to create the best content. After all, nothing still beats a proper camera’s image quality, and you’ll be hard-pressed to edit camera clips on your phone.
A powerful desktop PC is great to have, but for entry-level content creators, a capable laptop might just be the best option when it comes to flexibility. After all, you’ll have a difficult time bringing a PC with you if you need to work somewhere outside your house.
Of course, laptops might seem difficult to work on given their smaller displays compared to desktop PCs with monitors. Enter ASUS’ latest 16-inch laptops which come with large OLED displays and promising CPU+GPU combos.
One of these new laptops is the Vivobook Pro 16 OLED, an impressive new notebook that’s made for beginner and/or hobbyist content creators. Don’t mistake it for a basic laptop though as the Pro 16 OLED very much deserves its Pro moniker.
Powerful Internals for Your Creative Needs
Many laptops, even premium ones only feature integrated graphics. While these are fine enough for everyday use, laptops like these are not ideal for content creation, especially if you need a partner for editing/rendering videos.
With this in mind, ASUS packed the Vivobook Pro 16 OLED with up to an NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti GPU. Thanks to the GPU, the new Vivobook should be a great partner for video editing – great news if you like working on videos even while outside.
A good GPU is great and all, but without a proper CPU, a laptop won’t be any good. ASUS thought of this and paired the 3050 Ti with up to an Intel Core i7-12700H processor. This 12th-generation H-series processor is something that we’ve been able to test last year, and it is definitely a strong CPU, all while being surprisingly good when it comes to power consumption.
On top of this CPU and GPU combo, the laptop also has 16GB of RAM, meaning it won’t slow down even if there are lots of open apps. Plus, the laptop has up to 1TB of SSD storage so users won’t run out of space anytime soon.
ASUS IceCool Plus Cooling Technology
Having powerful internals is great and all, but there’s no point if a laptop doesn’t have a good cooling system. This is because overheating is a big issue in many laptops, meaning some models aren’t able to give a user full power so that it won’t shut down due to overheating.
In this regard, the Vivobook Pro 16 OLED will have no issues as ASUS packed the laptop with IceCool Plus thermal technology. This cooling solution features upgraded 8 mm and 6 mm heat pipes, complete with 86-blade dual fans for optimal cooling. Essentially, this setup means the laptop’s Intel CPU and NVIDIA GPU can run at up to a 90W combined TDP in Performance mode.
Thanks to this, the laptop will be able to keep up with various content creation workloads. Plus, this bodes well for its long-term battery life given that heat is a big factor in battery life degradation.
Dedicated MUX Switch: Great for Gaming
The Vivobook Pro 16 OLED is great for content creation, and its GPU also means you can use it for some gaming to relax. Whether it’s esports titles or triple-A games, the laptop should have enough power to run them well.
Despite not being a gaming laptop, the Pro 16 OLED packs a MUX switch. Essentially, this allows the GPU to directly send graphics frames to the monitor. For reference, many other gaming laptops don’t have MUX switches which means the GPU must be first routed to the integrated graphics card, adding an extra layer that can result in more latency.
Thanks to the MUX Switch, the Vivobook Pro 16 OLED should have reduced latency for a smoother gaming experience, perfect for taking advantage of its CPU + GPU combo as well as its high refresh rate display.
Eye-catching OLED Display
Speaking of the display, the laptop is one of ASUS’ latest devices with a larger 16-inch display. The 16-inch screen might not seem like a big step up on the specs sheet, but the extra inches add a whole lot in terms of making the display look and feel much larger. The larger size not only makes it more comfortable to use but also makes it better for multitasking, especially with its taller 16:10 aspect ratio. Plus, the gaming experience is always better with a larger screen.
Size aside, the laptop’s screen is quite nice given its high 3200 x 2000 resolution as well as its 120Hz refresh rate. It should also be a good match for editing photos and videos with its Pantone validation. It’s also comfortable to use for hours thanks to its TUV Rheinland low-blue light certification.
Comprehensive I/O
Many laptops now often have limited connectivity options, with some only having a couple of USB Type-C ports. Thankfully, the new Vivobook is not like these laptops as it has a wealth of I/O.
Specifically, the laptop has 1 x Thunderbolt 4, 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, 1 x full-sized HDMI 2.1, 1 x micro SD card reader (UHS-II), 1 x 3.5 mm Audio combo jack, and 1 x RJ-45 gigabit Lan port.
Yes, the laptop has an HDMI 2.1 port, meaning it should be future-proof for connecting with high-end displays. The SD card is also very much a plus for the easy transfer of files from a camera or another device.
