While it was originally set to be taken down this month, Gundam Factory Yokohama announced that the life-size moving Gundam is extended to March 2024.
In case you missed it, the life-size Gundam was unveiled in late 2020 at the Gundam Factory Yokohama in Japan. While it’s not based on one specific Gundam, it is styled similarly to the iconic RX-78-2, albeit with some elements that make it unique. Though the best part about it is that it moves; much more than the Gundam Unicorn in Odaiba in fact.
Gundam Factory Yokohama was originally set to open by October 2020, though it opened in December 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic which delayed its construction a bit. While it was set to close in March 2022 (as it’s just a temporary exhibit), its closure was delayed to March 2023 to accommodate tourists given that Japan only opened to international tourism back in October 2022.
Thanks to its success, the life-size Gundam in Yokohama was extended to March 2024, meaning fans who are meaning to visit Japan in the next year will have a chance to see the impressive Gundam statue!
In the official announcement, it was also revealed that there are further plans for activities at the venue. Plus, the lights and movement showcase at night will continue until the Gundam Factory closes next year.
The life-size statue is located in Yokohama city which is located just less than an hour from central Tokyo.
