It has been six years since the game’s release, and now, Square Enix has announced that Nier Automata has shipped over 7.5 million copies.
The game’s latest shipment numbers were revealed via the series’ official Japanese Twitter account. According to the post, the 7.5 million copies shipped are based on physical shipments plus digital downloads of Nier Automata.
This is a huge milestone for the franchise as it eclipses pretty much every other game in the Drakengard/Nier series. For reference, the nearest game in terms of shipments is Nier Replicant ver 1.22474487139… which shipped over 1.5 million copies.
While this might be an unfair comparison, it’s still a testament to how popular Automata continues to be. Though it’s not too surprising given how 2B, 9S, and the other Automata characters are still visible through various collabs, as well as in anime form through A-1 Pictures’ Nier Automata ver1.1a anime.

Nier Automata was initially released on the PS4 back in March 2017, followed by a PC release shortly after. Since then, the game has also been released on Xbox One and Switch in 2018 and 2022, respectively.
While the Drakengard and Nier series weren’t that popular among the general gaming audience, Nier Automata quickly became a hit. It’s fair to say that its strong hook was thanks to the the unique visuals and character design. Though it also got a lot of praise from players and critics for its interesting story and satisfying action gameplay.
Given the game’s success, here’s hoping that a proper Nier Automata sequel gets released in the future.
