After being stuck in development hell since 2015, news for the Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie adaptation has resurfaced as Universal Studios released its first official teaser.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie is produced by Blumhouse Productions and will star The Hunger Games actor Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, with Matthew Lillard who will play the role of William Afton.
Other confirmed cast members with unnamed roles are Mary Stuart Masterson, Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling, Elizabeth Lail, Lucas Grant, and Jessica Blackmore. This film adaptation will be directed by Emma Tammi, who will also collaborate with the screenplay with Seth Cuddeback and Scott Cawthon, the original creator of the video game that the film is based on.
From what we can make out of the short teaser, Five Nights at Freddy’s the Movie is based on the first game and will mostly take elements from the game’s extended lore. This is most likely the case since Scott Cawthon was closely working with the film production since day one.
The movie was first announced in April 2015 by Warner Bros. Pictures, with Gil Kenan as the planned director, but due to conflicts, the production was later delayed. The production was then picked up by Blumhouse Productions on March 2017, and in the following year, it was announced that Chris Columbus will become its new director. Unfortunately, Columbus would exit the project in September 2021, and it was only on October 2022 that Emma Tammi finally took the mantle to direct the film.
Five Nights at Freddy’s the Movie is scheduled to be released in US theaters with simultaneous streaming on Peacock on October 27, 2023.
