It’s rare that we see innovative first-gen technology fitted into mid-range devices. Usually industry-first tech releases are saved for the crème dele crème Flagship offerings. That’s why when HONOR Philippines mentioned that the up-coming HONOR 90 5G has an industry-first feature, we were more than curious to check it out.
The HONOR 90 5G is the first HONOR mid-ranger to be equipped with a large 200MP main camera along with some snazzy optics like a 12MP Ultra-wide and Macro Camera (f/2.2) as well as a supporting 2MP Depth Sensor (f/2.4).
But what makes the HONOR 90 5G so interesting is its best-in-class display that ranked #1 in DxOmark’s ranking (at least for its category).
The HONOR 90 5G has a large 6.7” AMOLED Quad-curved Floating Display (2664×1200) with up to 120Hz refresh rate support. Sure we’ve seen a lot of 6.7” curved AMOLED’s in the market but none of them have the highest PWM Dimming rate at 3840Hz. The HONOR 90 5G’s PWM Dimming (or Pulse Width Modulation) Dimming simply allows the LED to pulse at a higher rate so you maintain a more comfortable viewing experience as this lessens the strain on the eyes significantly.
Here’s an example:
A low PWM count lends to higher screen flicker and contribute to eye strain when staring your screens for a prolonged period of time. Inversely, a higher PWM count means less flicker and less eye strain.
In fact, HONOR is so confident with the high PWM Dimming of the HONOR 90 5G that they’re claiming they have the world’s first Flicker-Free or Zero-Flicker screen on a smartphone device. A very bold claim. I mean, they did receive the TÜV Rheinland Flicker Free Certification and achieved the risk-free dimming levels. This is great news especially for binge-watching people (like ourselves here at UnGeek) who gorgeous down mounds of entertainment content per week.
As a mid-ranger, we’re happy to note that the HONOR 90 5G is equipped with the QUALCOMM Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Accelerated Edition. This slightly overclocked version should help avid gamers go through their game daily’s without much consequences. We’ve tried several games and so far, everything worked well – including Genshin Impact (although you’ll have to clock graphics to low for better and more consistent framerate). Still if that’s not enough, the unit is equipped with 12GB of RAM (with extendable VRAM) and a large 512GB of internal memory.
Plus, if the internals and the industry-first features aren’t convincing enough, the unit is supppper pretty! I mean look at this.
The super luxe Diamond Silver colorway has a gorgeous sheen to it and the diamond laser-etched designs at the back just adds a delicate interesting touch. Ahhh exquisite.
The HONOR 90 5G will formally launch on August 15, 2023, so best to stay tuned to HONOR Philippines’ official social pages. Plus, we heard you could get the chance to win a unit by simply watching the livestream happening that day.
UnGeek will definitely be there to celebrate with our HONOR PH friends and you can expect more stories from us so keep it locked it here.
