Square Enix had an impressive showing at Tokyo Game Show 2023!

A star-studded lineup was seen at the Tokyo Game Show 2023 Square Enix booth. Bringing back beloved classics, continuing critically acclaimed franchises, and introducing potential surprises propelled Square Enix to be one of the most exciting parts of the event. If you weren’t able to go, don’t worry! Here are all the Tokyo Game Show 2023 Square Enix games we played.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Tokyo Game Show 2023 Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Easily the highest profile game in the Square Enix booth, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the much-anticipated sequel to the phenomenal Final Fantasy VII Remake. As soon as the event gates opened, lines were already forming to get a chance to try the game out. The TGS 2023 demo version allowed us to play through 2 modes: a linear mission with Cloud and Sephiroth and an open-world segment with a handful of side objectives and a small bite of the story content.

Those who played the 2020 remake will feel right at home as FF 7 Rebirth plays exactly like it while adding some key improvements in visuals, combat mechanics, and gameplay expansions. Check out our Final Fantasy VII Rebirth first impressions to know more as to why everyone is so excited about Cloud’s next outing.

Star Ocean The Second Story R

Tokyo Game Show 2023 Star Ocean The Second Story R

An absolute banger of a classic RPG that was released 25 years ago on the PS1, Square Enix is remastering what is considered to be the best Star Ocean game with Star Ocean The Second Story R. Fans of the original release will be pleased to know that one of the main focuses of the developers with The Second Story R is to keep things as authentic as possible. The game you know and love will stay the same in a way that’s better than ever.

In our Star Ocean The Second Story R first impressions, we mentioned that this is potentially the definitive way to get into the franchise whether you’ve been a seasoned veteran or a curious newcomer. You just can’t beat the classics and The Second Story R proves that it’s as timeless as it is great.

DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince

Dragon Quest The Dark Prince

The Dragon Quest franchise has achieved lasting popularity due to its timeless gameplay, captivating storytelling, and commitment to preserving its unique charm. Since its inception, the series has consistently delivered engaging turn-based combat, endearing characters, and a colorful, fantasy-filled world that appeals to both nostalgic fans and newcomers alike. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is yet another entry that hopes to continue those traditions. Luckily, you can find out for yourself as a free demo is already available to download now through Nintendo e-shops worldwide.

Infinity Strash: DRAGON QUEST The Adventure of Dai

An intriguing spinoff game, Infity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai is a departure from the series-staple turn-based gameplay in favor of real-time action combat. The word “Strash” is a combination of “strike” and “flash.” Despite a noticeable change of systems, the developers were keen to make sure that the game stays true to the core of what makes a great Dragon Quest title. During our hands-on with it, we noticed that map exploration felt like it was sidelined a bit to give way to boss fights. It was also confirmed that there would be endless dungeon content to explore. Only time will tell about how this will all turn out in the full release.

Foam Stars

When Foam Stars was first revealed, the gaming community wasn’t exactly keen on the idea. There were a lot of comparisons to the highly successful Splatoon franchise where instead of paint, foam was being used. Walking into this one, we didn’t really think much of it. After getting proper hands-on, Foam Stars might honestly be one of the sleeper hits of 2024 once it releases. Yes, it’s unironically good.

Foam Stars is an exhilarating team-based game that revolves around the concept of protecting your designated star player, who has a limited set of lives. The teams are comprised of players with diverse skill sets, including AR and Sniper roles, each bringing unique abilities and special moves to the table. The foam terrain not only serves as the battleground but also evolves over time, providing valuable cover for tactical maneuvers. This dynamic gameplay creates an intense and competitive atmosphere that keeps participants fully engaged and invested in the action. It’s unique, chaotic, and a whole lot of fun.

Square Enix has a lot going for it with its upcoming releases with each one giving us different reasons to be excited for. Whether you might be a fan of RPGs, single-player adventures, or PvP titles, Square Enix’s 2024 and beyond releases are something to keep on the radar.
