Call of Duty is a franchise that feels like it’s never going away. Ever since 2003 all the way to today, it has dominated sales charts and active player counts. 2020’s Warzone was massive for the franchise in two ways. It brought back so many series veterans to try out a new but familiar way to play CoD but it also attracted a younger audience with its unique take on the battle royale genre. All that is being brought to the mobile gaming space. We got to fly out to Japan to hear the Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile Executive Producer speak on development experience.
What were the key pillars from the original game that the team knew they had to bring to Warzone Mobile at all costs?
“Relentlessly Warzone. The game needed to feel exactly like what it was when you played it on console or PC. The same beloved maps, game modes, contracts, and weapon handling.”
When it comes to AAA games on modern platforms, you’d think that smartphones would have trouble trying to emulate the same immersive experience. That wasn’t acceptable for the Warzone Mobile team.
“If you’re familiar with the original Warzone, you can just pick this one up and play it like it was just yesterday. If you’re new, you get to experience what so many of our fans havve been loving over the years. The same action-packed experience, whatever platform you’re in.”
One of the more impressive things about Warzone Mobile is how integrated it is to the console and PC versions of the game. It has full cross-progression. You can level up your character, weapons, and purchase bundles wherever you play, and it’ll carry over to any version of the game.
“Cross-progression was the best decision we ever made. Leveraging the shared Call of Duty tech gave us access to all the amazing content that existed in PC and consoles. This allowed us to tune the gameplay to match all player styles on the phone. It’s the best of all worlds. Call of Duty, anywhere, anytime.”
Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is now available on iOS and Android devices for free.
