Netflix renews 3 Body Problem, but will it be a proper season 2?

3 Body Problem will get to wrap up its story, though it's not clear how many episodes it will still have.

Following its release back in March, Netflix finally announced that it has renewed 3 Body Problem, but it’s not clear if it will be a proper season 2.

The show’s renewal was revealed via a short video shared by Netflix which simply states  “3 Body Problem returns.” In a report by Deadline though, it was mentioned that Netflix has picked up additional episodes for the series which will conclude the story. The report also confirmed that creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo will return for the show’s conclusion.

Given the nature of the renewal, it seems that the new sci-fi series won’t get a proper second season with eight episodes, meaning it will likely only get 6-8 episodes.

This is an interesting move, and one that may be a bit concerning to fans given how difficult it would be to wrap up the story in less than a season. The move may also indicate that the show has done well in terms of viewership, but not enough to get multiple seasons as with something like Avatar.

Of course, a satisfying ending could still happen given that the series includes elements from all three books in author Liu Cixin’s trilogy. Plus, even if it won’t be a true 3 Body Problem season 2, the fact that it will get a conclusion is much better than getting canceled outright.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, 3 Body Problem’s first season is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.
