Big, Black, and Beautiful. Here's the new ROG Ally X.

Our trip to COMPUTEX 2024 gave us a firsthand look at much of the newest tech releases, one of which was the ASUS ROG Ally X. The brand released the original Ally last year, and garnered quite a bit of buzz as it went head-to-head with every other handheld in the market.

While they didn’t exactly win the portable console battle royale, ASUS is back with a vengeance–sporting a bigger body and darker chassis.

We got our hands on the ROG Ally X during COMPUTEX Day 1, amidst all the other people raring to give it a go. The showcase which happened the day prior already gave us what to expect–some top tier specs.

As it packs an AMD Ryzen Extreme processor, a speedy 1 TB of M.2 2280 storage, and 24 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, you’re guaranteed to run every single game in your library. At least, that was the case with its predecessor.

The sleek, black body is a tad larger than the original Ally, and a bit heavier, too. There was a bit of a struggle to hold it with one hand. When it comes to handling it during gameplay, the heft provided some ergonomic comfort–and filled out our hands quite nicely.

It’s too soon to tell if it will conk out after a few hours of gameplay or become a hot plate after a day of continuous level grinding, but it’s snappy enough for a game as demanding as Tekken 8, in our case. No lagging, no frame drops, no screen tears–even after tinkering with the in-game settings.

Upon observing other people testing out Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm and other such titles, we didn’t see anyone complaining–in any language. It’s safe to say we all had the same good enough experience.

We do wish we had more time with this bigger, blacker version of the Ally. Our experience with the OG was quite enjoyable, and we look forward to experiencing the power and size of its successor.
