There are lots of rumors and speculation about a potential Elden Ring movie or series adaptation, and now, George R. R. Martin may have hinted at them being true.
With the recent release of Shadow of the Erdtree, Elden Ring is once again at the forefront of gaming discussions. Aside from conversations about its difficulty and lore reveals, there’s also speculation about an adaptation in the future. This is thanks in part to the fact that director Hidetaka Miyazaki said in an interview with The Guardian that there’s interest in an Elden Ring movie or series adaptation with the right partner.
While not an official response to the speculation, Martin mentioned Elden Ring again in his official blog, and he dropped what is probably a hint for potential projects being cooked up.
To start, Martin talked about Elden Ring’s Nebula Award for Game Writing back in 2023 which is his third Nebula Award (as he did the worldbuilding for the game). After sharing thankful words to both the SFWA and the Elden Ring development team at FromSoftware, Martin also had some interesting words to say about rumors of a movie or series adaptation.
To be exact, he said that he had nothing to say, but he did so rather cryptically. As such, many fans think that an Elden Ring adaptation may be in the works, or is at least being considered.
Given Martin’s involvement in the worldbuilding for the game, it won’t be a surprise to see him be involved in a series or movie adaptation. After all, Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire got two adaptations (one for the main series and one for the prequel Fire & Blood), with HBO’s House of the Dragon currently airing its second season.
As Elden Ring has become a massive hit, it would make sense if a movie or a series adaptation will be made, though it would likely be difficult to adapt the game itself. Instead, many fans think that a prequel series following Marika and the other demigods would be better and easier to make.
If it does get adapted, fans are hoping that it will be done via animation instead of live-action. After all, animated video game adaptations like Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners have become massive hits.
