AirAsia reveals Persona 5 and Sonic the Hedgehog Planes: Here’s how to ride them

We can't wait to see these Persona and Sonic planes fly the skies!

AirAsia, together with Atlus and SEGA, have finally unveiled the new Persona 5 and Sonic the Hedgehog planes that will fly the skies very soon.

After an initial teaser via social media, AirAsia finally revealed real-life images of its new SEGA and Atlus planes. Up first is the Airbus A320 with the tail number 9M-AFF. This is part of the AirAsia Malaysia fleet, and it comes with a striking Persona 5 Royal logo on both sides that matches AirAsia’s signature red color. Plus, Persona fans would love the addition of Morgana and Joker on the right and left sides of the plane, respectively.

Next up, there’s the bigger Airbus A330 with the tail number 9M-XXU. This is part of the AirAsia X fleet, and it comes with a special Sonic the Hedgehog livery. Unlike the Persona 5 plane, this Sonic AirAsia airliner comes with a striking blue livery that features Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Amy Rose.

Along with the liveries, fans will also be happy to know that both the Persona and Sonic AirAsia planes will come with special designs inside. There will also be limited-time goodies and a menu item that  even those not flying on these planes can get.

To start, the collab will feature a special menu that includes a Sonic’s Golden Ring Cake — a donut with a golden glaze and Sonic-themed toppings. What’s nice is that this treat can be pre-booked before all AirAsia Malaysia (flight code: AK) and AirAsia X Malaysia (flight code: D7) flights.

Along with this, there are also various merch that will be available beginning in the first quarter of 2025. Again, this will be available on all AirAsia Malaysia and AirAsia X flights, as well as on the AirAsia MOVE Duty Free.

These merch include official replicas of both planes, Sonic magnets, and Persona bag tags. It’s not clear when these will be released, though you may want to get these ASAP when they launch as we expect these to sell out fairly quickly.

How to see and ride the AirAsia Persona and Sonic the Hedgehog Planes

Interested in flying on these planes? AirAsia has no confirmed the official schedule yet, though it did confirm that the planes will fly routes in select major cities in Southeast Asia and Asia Pacific. These include Bangkok, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Shanghai, and Sydney.

AirAsia also noted that the A320 primarily serves short-haul destinations (less than 4 hours), while the Airbus A330 mainly operates long-haul routes (5 hours and up to 8 hours).

Given that AirAsia X and AirAsia Malaysia are both headquartered in Malaysia, chances are that you can get to fly on the Persona plane on SEA routes, while the Sonic plane will fly routes to destinations such as Shanghai and Sydney.

As other airline collabs like Pokemon often have special websites where you can see the routes the special planes fly on, chances are that AirAsia will also have a website where flight details will be shared. Of course, there’s still an element of luck to fly on these given that plane schedules can change at the last minute.

If you’re just interested in seeing them though, your best bet is to go to the Kuala Lumpur international airport as both airlines are based there.
