Little Nightmares III has a new story but is still set in the same world, confirms producer

Little Nightmares III's producer also shared the team's approach in crafting the new standalone story.

While Six has been a fixture of the series since it began, she won’t appear in the Little Nightmares III story, though the game’s producer confirmed that the new game will still take place in the same world.

Aside from getting a hands-on session of the game, we also got to chat with the game’s producer Coralie Fenniello at Bandai Namco in a media roundtable interview.

There, we asked Fenniello about the game’s standalone story. She explained that the game will be a new story that new players can appreciate, though it will still be a treat for fans who played the first two games because they share the same setting.

Fenniello explained:

“Basically, Little Nightmares III is a new story but in the same place and with the same lore.

“Everything in Little Nightmares is part of the same world. Everything is taking place in the Nowhere in the games which is the nightmarish world. But in transmedia content such as the podcast, we are exploring the real world of Little Nightmares and how the two worlds are interacting together. “

As for the decision behind making a new story with new playable characters, Fenniello said that this was because Supermassive Games wanted to bring their own take to the game. After all, this is the first game in the series made by the studio as the first two were made by Tarsier Studios.

“It was important for us to create a whole new story for Little Nightmares III,” said Fenniello. “The characters are central to the experience, so it was important for Supermassive to have their own elements. That’s why we decided to add new characters.”

Even though the focus was on bringing a new experience, the team at Supermassive still wanted to keep the DNA of the first two games intact. Essentially, the challenge for them was to be true to the first games while adding their unique elements.

Regarding this, Fenniello said:

“When we started [we looked at] the first two titles because it was very important to keep that DNA for Little Nightmares III. Though the game does take inspiration from many elements. I cannot tell you specific titles, but it’s important for us that everyone on the team brings their own references. This is because we are working a lot with how everyone is experiencing childhood fears, and to make sure that what we are creating speaks to everyone.”

Based on what we’ve seen (and tried) of the game, it seems that Little Nightmares III is balancing adding new things such as some brighter levels with tried-and-true mechanics and visuals from the previous titles. Hopefully, this is the case with the game’s final release version.

Little Nightmares III will be released on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC sometime in 2025.
