It has been two weeks since the event, and now, it’s confirmed that Tokyo Game Show 2024 has gotten over 15 million views online.
While the in-person event at Makuhari Messes saw thousands of gamers from all over the world attend, Tokyo Game Show 2024 also held online programs. This online component began in 2020 due to the pandemic, though it has since become a key pillar of the event as it enables gamers who can’t visit in person to see the latest news and highlights from TGS.
For this year’s event, Tokyo Game Show held online programs on the TGS official YouTube channel, X account, niconico, and the TGS Special page on Steam. Meanwhile, the programs were streamed on DouYu and bilibili in China, with IGN being tapped to stream the programs in Europe and the US (with English and Japanese with simultaneous interpretation and subtitles). In total, the views of both live and archived programs were 15,962,811 from September 26 to October 7, 2024.
What’s more, there’s also TGSDW2024, a virtual version of the exhibition that ran from September 20 to October 6. Here, visitors got to explore a virtual island featuring rendered booths. Throughout the virtual exhibition’s run, 117,090 visitors logged in with an average stay time of approximately 77 minutes.
Given the great numbers online for this year’s online programs, it’s all but guaranteed that we’ll see Tokyo Game Show hold more online streams for future versions.
Even with the success of the online component, TGS’ in-person event is still a huge part of the show. After all, this years’ show had a record 274,739 visitors – that’s 12.9% more than last year’s 243,238 attendees.
The next Tokyo Game Show 2025 will take place from September 25 to 28, and it will be held once again at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
