Square Enix today unveiled Final Fantasy XIV Mobile, the upcoming smartphone version of its hit MMORPG that’s coming to Android and iOS.
The new mobile version of FF14 was announced with a reveal trailer that features a special message from Naoki Yoshida. There, he explained that FF14 Mobile will not be a 1:1 smartphone version of the original game. Instead, he called it a sister to the main game as it promises to deliver a similar experience, but with combat mechanics tweaked for mobile. While Square Enix is publishing the title, development is being handled by Lightspeed Studios.

Given that the game will essentially be a separate title from the original, it will be interesting to see how this game will play. It’s likely that its combat and other mechanics will be simpler, though the hope is that it at least captures the spirit of the original game.
Currently, there’s no word yet on a release date for the game, though Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will get playtests in China soon. It is also confirmed to get a global launch.
Hopefully, this global launch indeed means that the game will be available everywhere. After all, there are some Square Enix mobile titles that didn’t get a proper global release.
More details about the game will be revealed soon. For now, you can learn more about the game on its official website.
