OPPO Find X8 Review | Geek Lifestyle

Is this the best flagship smartphone device of 2024?

It’s been a while since OPPO offered a Find X series phone in the Philippines and it couldn’t have come at a better time than now. Ladies and gents, after 4 years, OPPO is giving us the OPPO Find X8.

With the last Find X launched in 2020 with the OPPO Find X2, we’ve come a long way in terms of technology and redefining what flagship phones should look like.

After the success of the OPPO Find N2 Flip and N3 Flip in the country, the brand finally listened to the clamor of many for a Find X series follow-up – and wooooh boi, what a follow-up it is!

Usually, we reserve our recommendation at the end, but we’ll change it just for this write-up. Is the OPPO Find X8 worth the wait (and the price tag)? The answer is a resounding YES from team UnGeek and it all boils down to two letters: A, I.

Okay, keep your eyebrows down and stop giving us the stink-eye, we’ll explain why a few paragraphs down. For now, it’s best that you keep this in mind as AI plays an integral role across the entire overall experience of using the device.

Geek-sthetic

The OPPO Find X8 is one of the brand’s more “compact” smartphone devices with a height of just under 6.2-inches. While smaller than most phones that came out this 2024, the device was meant to be handy enough that you can use it with one hand and large enough if you wish to use both hands as well.

The slender bezels (at 7.85mm thin) and smooth brushed metal frame meets a frosted glass rear case giving the device a luxurious feel. It’s minimalist but not boring – and that’s a very hard thing to pull off.

What keeps the design interesting is OPPO’s signature Cosmos Ring Camera Module that has a bit more sheen compared to the case.  According to the brand, the camera module bezels have already been reduced by as much as 40% compared to the previous series.

Keeping things light and fresh, the OPPO Find X8 (at least in the Philippines) comes in two distinct classic color: Space Black and Star Grey. Sadly, the more playful Shell Pink won’t be available here.

Binge-Watching Factor

Despite the physical size of the phone, the OPPO Find X8 offers a right-sized 6.59″ AMOLED display that can go up to 4500 nits of peak brightness if needed. The ultra-clear screen also benefits from having very thin bezels at just 1.45mm making this the first OPPO Phone with the thinnest bezel around and offers 90.3% screen-to-body ratio. The bezels are also uniform in size so there’s no thicker chin to speak of.

Everything was crafted so you get the most out of the display especially when watching your favorite shows.

It also enjoys from 120Hz adaptive refresh rate support and 3840Hz super high-frequency PWM dimming so viewing any media content on the OPPO Find X8 is easy on the eyes.

Gaming Prowess

The OPPO Find X8 is powered by the 3nm MediaTek Dimensity 9400 one of the first globally-available smartphone to house this chipset.  This means it can run basically any game you throw at it with ease and at the highest settings possible. Couple this with 12GB of RAM (+12GB Expanded VRAM) and 256GB of Internal Memory, the OPPO Find X8 becomes a handy gaming machine for a quick plays or long gaming sessions.

Thermals are also better managed thanks to the phone’s advanced cooling system in place and OPPO’s Trinity Engine. The fine tuned system allows for better power optimization and efficiency which lends to an 8.2% power consumption drop when playing games and 4.5% power drop when streaming videos, at least according to the  brand. In practice, after 2 consecutive hours of going through games after games of MLBB, the OPPO Find X8 is still cool to the touch and runs amazingly well.

More graphic demanding games like Genshin Impact didn’t have any noticeable frame drops as well over prolonged periods of gaming.

This is the kind of buttery smooth gaming one can expect from any decent flagship phone of the year — and obviously the OPPO Find X8 has it.

The flat display also lends to a much more ideal gaming usage since you’re less likely to press edges unlike if the screen is a bit more curved.

For those that need a bit more convincing on the gaming side we ran a few benchmarks on the device via 3DMark and for both Solar Bay  and Wild Life Extreme tests, the OPPO Find X8 scored highest among all the comparative phones on the list (including iPhone 15 Pro, Samsung S24 Ultra, etc.) here are the results.

Geek Photoshoot Capabilities

One of the key things that benefited from the new processor fitted into the OPPO Find X8 is its already superb photography capabilities. Armed with a triple-threat camera module of 50MP Sony LYT700 main camera, a 50MP Sony LYT600 Periscope telephoto camera, and a 50 MP ultra-wide shooter along with Hasselblad’s color profile, the OPPO Find X8’s AI enhancement is the stuff of science fiction wet dreams.

Remember in early 2000s on a sci-fi or action thriller sequence where the protagonist zooms in on an image rendering it blurred beyond recognition and after a few beep-boop-beep on a computer screen cleans the image up completely? Yeah that was BS then and even a few years back. But with the OPPO Find X8 and MediaTek Dimensity 9400? My dudes, check this out.

Right?!

Finally the digital zoom that once benefited absolutely no one now has sense.

Thank you, OPPO AI.

For normal photography you can expect great things from the OPPO Find X8. Here are a couple more samples.

Portrait shots are clear and benefits from a myriad of dramatic filters. We particularly love how the OPPO Find X8 utilizes black and white photography. Here. Comes. The. Drama.

There are other nifty AI features that are ready out of the box as well like AI Enhancement, Unblur, Lightning Snap (aka burst shot for moving subjects), and AI Remove tool.

The combination helps you achieve the best possible photo outcome even if you’re a photography novice like me.

For selfie camera users, the phone is equipped with a 32MP Sony IMX615 front-facing camera. And while that may not sound as sexy as rounding it off to another 50MP, you’ll be surprised with what the 32MP front-facing camera can do. One such easy task is being able to shoot 4K videos at 60fps — much like your rear camera. For seasoned content creators out there, this is a welcomed feature to have as quality of video becomes consistent regardless if you switch from rear to front-facing. In fact, the double OIS on the rear camera plus whatever AI wizardry OPPO applied to the cameras makes shooting videos (and taking photos) with the OPPO Find X8 superbly enjoyable. Oh, and you can zoom with very little image lost by 6x when using the rear cameras to take videos making this a pretty good phone to bring with you for concerts.

The Photography AI features used for the OPPO Find X8 is one of the best well-rounded tools that currently exist in the market and this, we feel, is due to OPPO’s obsession with perfecting and embracing our AI overlords. Okay, kidding aside, OPPO has been heavily investing on AI that they built huge facilities to house large-scale servers. We visited one of the three being built last year during our OPPO Shenzhen trip. Here’s a video refresher if you guys want to see.

But this only means that the brand is fully equipped to handle various complex computations and we’re seeing some of it with this flagship iteration.

Everyday Reliability

Even with a smaller frame, OPPO was able to fit the Find X8 with a large 5630 mAh Silicon-Carbon battery. The new Ai-powered chipset also helps with amazing power management enabling us to go home with still a few juice left. With the 80W SuperVOOC Fast Charger, you can fully power up your OPPO Find X8 in about 48-minutes. But perhaps, what’s new this time around is the introduction of OPPO AIRVOOC Wireless charging system. Yes folks, this has a 50W super wireless-charging capabilities, and it’s also MagSafe friendly.

And if you’re thinking, hmm, they’re closely copying a lot of Apple iPhone best practices, well…they kinda are. The OPPO Find X8 also sports a quick Alert Slider so you can switch between Silent Mode, Vibrate, or Ring with a quick flick of a button. For file sharing, OPPO made it easy to share images between OPPO Find X8 phones annnnd iPhones. The Tap to Share button found on the device allows quick sharing via NFC. You’ll need to install the O+ Connect app on your Apple devices, though.

Lastly, according to our friends from OPPO Philippines, OPPO commits 4 years of OS update and a whopping 6 years of security update for their OPPO Find X8 Series. This is the longest software commitment to date by the brand. This is crucial especially if you’re investing a large(r) sum of money towards an electronic device.

Out of the box the OPPO Find X8 runs on Android 15 and on OPPO’s ColorOS 15 as well — which should give you more AI tools at your disposal. Lastly, the OPPO Find X8 benefits from having the AI Linkboost — a way for the device to enhance internet connectivity to peak performance level even in crowded venues like concert grounds. It also has a Triple Wi-Fi Antennae system that reduces average latency in congested Wi-Fi or 5G areas by up to 45.56% according to the brand.

Final Geek Lifestyle Verdict

After 4 years of being absent from the market the OPPO Find X8 finds its way back to the country in glorious fashion. It took them a while but this is definitely a comeback worthy of celebration as we find the OPPO Find X8 one of the best (if not the current best) flagship phone for 2024 especially when you consider that it’s priced at just Php 54,999 (12GB + 256GB variant).

With a thoughtfully crafted design language (both the physical phone and the more streamlined ColorOS 15), a robust internals with the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 leading the charge, and a camera system that rivals that of flagship phones twice its price, the OPPO Find X8 is definitely worth every single Peso you spend on it.
