While fans are hoping to see a sequel, Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that Elden Ring 2 is not currently being developed at FromSoftware. This might be a disappointment to some, but at least Miyazaki also said that future Elden Ring projects may be considered.
Recently, the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia ceremony happened on December 3. There, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki accepted the Grand Award which was given to the three PlayStation titles with the highest worldwide sales between October 2023 and September 2024 in Japan.
After receiving the award, Miyazaki participated in a roundtable interview where he was asked about the development of Shadow of the Erdtree. Miyazaki was also asked about future plans for Elden Ring given the game’s success.
Regarding a potential Elden Ring 2, Miyazaki said that FromSoftware is “not considering development” for a sequel at this point. Sadly for fans who are hoping for a sequel, Miyazaki’s answer pretty much confirms we won’t see Elden Ring 2 anytime soon, if at all.
That’s not to say FromSoftware is shelving the Elden Ring IP though. Miyazaki followed up by saying that the door is not closed for future Elden Ring projects.
Plus, Miyazaki said that “FromSoftware is running multiple projects as usual,” meaning fans of the studio’s work should have some new games to look forward to in the coming years.
Given the success of Elden Ring, it’s likely that we’ll see a new series entry sometime in the future, whether it’s a proper sequel or another game that’s set in the same universe.
Even as someone who considers Elden Ring to be FromSoftware’s best game to date, I do like that the studio is not trying to go all-in on the IP just because it was a smashing success. After all, FromSoftware could’ve simply milked Dark Souls given its popularity. Instead, the studio released even more interesting titles over the past decade such as Bloodborne and Sekiro.
