Sunrise announced the new Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX anime series which is being produced by Khara, the studio behind the Rebuild of Evangelion film series.
This new anime was announced during the Gundam Conference Winter 2024, and its reveal came with a new trailer that gave fans a nice taste of what to expect. Aside from showing off the new mobile suit, the trailer also features the anime’s key characters.
Check out the new trailer here:
As with most Gundam TV anime, this will have a standalone story. Thus, this should be a show that even those not familiar with Gundam can watch. Given that it’s being animated by the Hideaki Anno’s studio, it’s likely that it will serve as another great intro to the franchise, much like The Witch from Mercury back in 2022.
Speaking of its story, the anime’s premise is described as:
Amate Yuzuriha is a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony floating in outer space.
When she meets a war refugee named Nyaan, Amate is drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle.
Under the entry name “Machu,” she throws herself into fierce battle day after day, piloting the GQuuuuuuX. Then an unidentified Gundam mobile suit pursued by both the space force and the police appears before her, along with its pilot, a boy named Shuji.
While the premise is interesting, its title is quite out there to say the least. Thankfully, Sunrise confirmed that the show’s title is pronounced “g-quax.” We don’t think it makes much sense, though hopefully this will be explained when the series airs.
Any new Gundam anime is exciting, but what makes this even more promising is that it’s being made by Khara. Along with the studio’s involvement, Sunrise confirmed that Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno will be involved as a co-writer alongside Yoji Enokido. Directing the series is Kazuya Tsurumaki (of FLCL fame), with character and mech design by Take (Katanagatari) and Ikuto Yamashita (Evangelion), respectively.
Also revealed are the three main cast members:
- Tomoyo Kurosawa (Mitsumi Iwakura in Skip and Loafer) as Amate Yuzuriha
- Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman in Attack on Titan) as Nyaan
- Shimba Tsuchiya (Tsutomu Goshiki in Haikyuu) as Shuji Ito
For now, there’s no word yet on when Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX will officially release, though it was confirmed that an edited version of the anime’s episodes will be released in Japanese cinemas on January 17, 2025.
While there’s no international release date yet, the trailer did tease that overseas release information will be shared soon.
