Interview: GIANTS Software’s Martin Rabl on the stand-out features of Farming Simulator 25 and more

Rabl shared insight into the game's new East Asian farmlands along with the new accessibility features.

Farming Simulator 25 finally launched last month, and recently, we also got to ask some questions to Martin Rabl of GIANTS Software, the studio behind the beloved simulation franchise.

As the latest Farming Simulator series entry features the new East Asian farmlands, that was one of the key features we wanted to know more about. Of course, we also asked about the game’s accessibility features considering how daunting it can feel for newer players to jump into the series.

Martin Rabl, GIANTS Software

What type of research did you do to develop the game’s new Asia map and rice farming features?

MR: The East Asian theme in Farming Simulator 25 draws inspiration from a mix of countries in the region, rather than focusing on one specific nation. The developers aimed to create an atmosphere that balances the harmony of rural landscapes with the modernity of vibrant cities typical of East Asia. To create an authentic Asian experience, the team conducted extensive research, including consulting with agricultural experts and studying traditional and modern farming methods in East Asia. For rice, we ended up with two different processes which vary depending on when the fields are flooded.

What challenges did you face while developing the new East Asian farmlands and the rice cultivation mechanic?

MR: The primary challenges included replicating the intricate process of rice farming, such as flooding fields and managing water levels while maintaining accessibility for players. Simultaneously, we needed to create special fields for rice, as they have a surrounding edge to keep the water inside. The special process for planting seedlings in water has also raised the demand for improved water physics and new machinery.

Can you share how different raising livestock will be on the Asian map compared to the North American and European maps?

MR: Farming Simulator 25 is an open-world game that creates a frame and it’s up to the players to decide which animal or crop they go for. All elements are usable on all maps – even while buffalos and rice are more typical for Asia, there are no limitations and it’s up to the users to decide how they build their agricultural empire.

Which of the new additions are you most excited for players to try out and experience?

MR: The standout feature of Farming Simulator 25 is its authenticity combined with its global appeal and enormous size. With the addition of new regions such as East Asia and new crops like rice, beans, or spinach it offers an unparalleled farming experience. We are especially proud of the GPS steering assistance and ground deformation as they add realism to the game. Additionally, the game’s highly realistic visuals, a wide array of more than 400 authentic machinery, and emphasis on both solo and cooperative online gameplay make it the definitive farming simulation experience. We hope that players try out as much as possible to dive deep into farming!

Are there any new accessibility features in Farming Simulator 25 that are aimed at newer players?

MR: Yes, Farming Simulator 25 includes a redesigned tutorial system, providing an introduction for beginners. Additionally, the game offers customizable difficulty settings and many options, which users can use to adjust their experience. We also introduced NPCs who give advice and are available next to the in-game help menu, and there is a more intuitive user interface to ensure an enjoyable experience for players of all skill levels. If all this is not enough, we recommend the Academy on our website which provides helpful insights into basic and advanced gameplay processes.

For new players, what are your top recommendations so they can more easily get started in the game?

Martin Rabl:

  • Start Small: Choose the easy difficulty setting and deactivate many optional elements like seasons, weeds, need for lime, etc.
  • Use the Tutorials: Take full advantage of the in-game tutorial and help menu to understand farming mechanics.
  • Talk to NPCs: Get their advice whenever you are stuck.
  • Accept mission tasks: Utilize missions to become familiar with basic equipment and tasks.

Farming Simulator 25 is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Mac.
