Today marks the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, and to celebrate, the PS5 got a new software update that adds five special themes, four of which are inspired by the previous generation consoles.
Before you get to see the themes though, you’ll first be greeted with a special boot-up screen that’s straight out of the OG PlayStation. Yes, you’ll also hear the iconic PS1 intro music accompanying the classic Sony Computer Entertainment logo. Instead of the original PS1 logo though, you’ll see the 30th anniversary logo on a black screen.
After this intro, you’ll be led to the 30th Anniversary themes menu where you can select one of five special appearances for your PS5 home screen. These not only change the look of the UI, but they also change the sounds to further mimic the previous PlayStation consoles.
First, there’s the 30th Anniversary theme which features the PlayStation logos at the top. This is a pretty nice design, but if you ask us, the console options are much nicer, especially if you grew up playing them. Plus, the fact that the UI sounds being changed make them more fun options.
The PS1 theme features a render of the OG console at the top. Then, the PS2 them has the console’s signature towers. Meanwhile, the PS3 has the flowing design in black which is straight out of the PS3’s home screen. Finally, the PS4 theme has the clean blue waves of the previous-generation console’s home page.
Personally, I went with the PS2 theme as that was my first PlayStation console, meaning I have fond memories seeing those iconic towers on the menu (even though they looked and sounded quite ominous). I might change it up after some time though as I also spent tons of hours playing on the PS3, so the theme is also quite nostalgic for me.
It’s nice to see that these themes are free for all PS5 owners as this is nice way to celebrate PlayStation’s milestone (especially as we can’t all get the 30th anniversary console). Take note that these themes are only available for a limited time, so you should enjoy them while they’re still up.
