In a glorious celebration of mobile photography, Filipino talents garnered much buzz at the HUAWEI XMAGE Awards 2024. In a showcase of remarkable creativity and skill on the global stage, Filipino photographers emerged as standout performers at the awards ceremony, held last November 27.

Justin Mendoza, a Filipino account manager, was crowned as one of the three Grand Winners for his compelling photograph “Pick a Beak,” which captured a pelican standing behind a fisherman. National Geographic Photographer Keith Ladzinski praised the image for its humor, sense of scale, and serendipitous composition, highlighting the photo’s ability to ask questions and engage viewers.

The competition, now in its eighth year, attracted over 650,000 entries from 86 countries and regions. Each of the three Grand Winners, including Mendoza, received a $10,000 HUAWEI Creation Fund, underscoring the event’s commitment to supporting emerging photographic talent.

Ferdinand Bendana won the Best of Mate Series with “Eagle’s Eye,” a photo taken on the HUAWEI Mate 50 Pro that Ladzinski commended for its intricate details and natural artistry. Jamir Lyndon Lumbao claimed the “Moments” category with “Refresh,” a photograph capturing the aftermath of a fire in Cavite, while Christopher G. Andres and John Paul C. Garbanzo secured runner-up positions in the same category.

Mary Grace Montives, a multimedia specialist, earned a runner-up spot in the “Faces” category with “Contemporary Elegance,” a portrait showcasing modern sophistication and artistic flair, shot on a HUAWEI Pura 70 Pro.

The exhibition, which displayed over 300 works from November 27 to 30, was divided into seven sections including “Moments,” “Faces,” and “So Far So Close,” offering art lovers an immersive experience into the world of mobile photography.

HUAWEI’s CEO of Consumer Business Group, Kevin Ho, emphasized the transformative power of mobile imaging, describing it as more than just a tool for documenting life, but a bridge for emotional communication. “I would like to extend my warm congratulations to the winners tonight and pay tribute to creators of the mobile imaging era. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to HUAWEI XMAGE users– each of you has made HUAWEI XMAGE go beyond being a tool for documenting life, evolving it into a bridge for emotional communication between people,” he said.
