How to best use the Orb of Chance in Path of Exile 2

These are the absolute MUSTS when using the Orb of Chance

If you’ve been playing Path of Exile 2‘s Early Access you are probably familiar with the game’s many currencies like Exalted Orbs, Divine Orbs, among many many others. If you’re reading this, then you’re probably asking yourself something like “What is this Orb of Chance?”, “How do I use it?”, “How do I BEST use it?”, and/or “Why did my item just disappear after using the Orb of Chance?”. While the item description of the Orb of Chance (or Chance Orb) is fairly straightforward, there are actually items that you should definitely use it on so you can get amazing late game items to power you up or sell for a hefty amount of Divines. Here’s a quick guide on how to best use an Orb of Chance in Path of Exile 2.

What is the Orb of Chance in Path of Exile 2 and how do you get it?

Just like the item description says, the Chance Orb “Unpredictably either upgrades a Normal item to Unique rarity or destroys it”. This means that you can use this on a Normal / White item. Doing so will either upgrade it into a Unique item or destroy the Normal / White item you used it on.

You can get Orbs of Chance by trading in Currency Exchange, disenchanting Unique items for a Chance Shard (10 of these creates 1 Orb of Chance), or hoping that the RNG will bless you with a random drop. While every enemy has a chance of dropping one, you usually have a higher chance of this happening with Magic or Rare enemies. These are the ones whose names are marked in Blue or Yellow. If you’ve reached the end game and you’re at a point where you are able to farm maps consistently, you’ll be able to get Chance Shards here and there and, even sometimes, you’ll be able to get a full Chance Orb as a drop.

As part of farming end game maps, you’ll also start to get a ton of Uniques dropping and you’ll also notice that a lot of them aren’t really great. In these cases, you can always go and Disenchant them through one of the town vendors (the one who’s usually in charge of selling flasks and magic-related gear like wands and staffs). Disenchanting a Unique will get you 1 Chance Shard.

If you want a more direct approach, you can always turn to the Currency Exchange. This is where players are able to trade. Each camp or town has a Gambling vendor that will be unlocked once you reach Cruel difficulty. From the table of Currencies, click Orb of Chance. The top-right button will show you just how much Currencies you own, and you’ll see if you have enough to purchase an Orb of Chance. Do note that the price might change depending on the day so make sure to check back in regularly and you might stumble upon a good deal.

What is best way to use an Orb of Chance?

If you want to get some of the BEST Unique Items out there for either your own use or for selling for boatloads of Divines, there are very specific types of gear that we recommend you aim for when using the Chance Orb. As of writing this guide, there are four (4) Normal / White items that you want to use them on: HEAVY BELT, GOLD/SAPPHIRE RINGS, and STELLAR AMULETS. Be sure to stock up on these as you see them and, not make the mistake of selling them to the NPCs. Otherwise, you can get them via trading with other players or visiting the POE2 Trade Site.

Here are the best items that you can invest an Orb of Chance in:

  • Astramentis Stellar Amulet
    • Use Orb of Chance on: Normal / White Stellar Amulet
    • Item Description
      • +(5-7) to all Attributes
      • +(80-100) to all Attributes
      • -4 Physical Damage taken from Attack Hits
    • Why you want this
      • That is a LOT of Attributes which can really buff up your character. This is immensely useful especially for builds like the Tri-Attribute Stacker build for the Gemling Legionnaire which synergizes with other Unique Items like the Pillar of the Caged God Quarterstaff and The Hands of Wisdom and Action Gloves which can lead to insane map clearing and boss melting DPS.
    • Rough Market Price: ~160 Divine Orbs
  • Dream Fragments Sapphire Ring
    • Use Orb of Chance on: Normal / White Sapphire Ring
    • Item Description
      • +(20-30)% to Cold Resistance
      • 20% increased maximum Mana
      • (30-50)% increased Mana Regeneration Rate
      • You cannot be Chilled or Frozen
    • Why you want this
      • If you are a Stormweaver Sorceress then, most likely, you will want this. The mana and mana regeneration rate numbers on that ring is really great plus you get the added benefit of being immune to getting Frozen (which, trust me, is one of the more annoying status ailments that can get you killed in POE2)
    • Rough Market Price: ~ 80 Divine Orbs
  • Headhunter Heavy Belt
    • Use Orb of Chance on: Normal / White Heavy Belt
    • Item Description
      • (20-30)% increased Stun Threshold
      • Charm Slots: 1
      • +(40-60) to maximum Life
      • +(20-40) to Strength
      • +(20-40) to Dexterity
      • When you Kill a Rare monster, you gain its Modifiers for 20 seconds
    • Why you want this
      • This item is a speed clearer’s dream. There have been a few builds already in Path of Exile 2 where players just clear the map at a lightning fast pace so this will make those runs even better as they can quickly down Rare monsters, take their modifiers to super buff themselves, and run off to the next rare monster. If you’ve ever dreamed of using those annoying modifiers those Rare monsters use in maps against them, this will definitely be the way.
    • Rough Market Price: ~ 12 Divine Orbs
  • Ventor’s Gamble Gold Ring
    • Use Orb of Chance on: Normal / White Gold Ring
    • Item Description
      • +(6-15)% increased Rarity of Items found
      • +(0-80) to maximum Life
      • +(0-20) to Spirit
      • (-40-40)% increased Rarity of Items found
      • +(-40-40)% to Fire Resistance
      • +(-40-40)% to Cold Resistance
      • +(-40-40)% to Lightning Resistance
    • Why you want this
      • Hey, I heard you like RNG so I added more RNG to your Orb of Chance RNG. This item, as the name suggests, is a gamble because not only will you roll the dice on whether the Chance Orb will turn your Gold Ring into Ventor’s Gamble, you’ll also roll the dice on the stats of the ring. This item can be REALLY GOOD or REALLY BAD as the numbers can roll right into the negatives reducing your item’s Magic Find or Elemental Resistances. However, if you DO luck out, then this will be quite the amazing ring for you and can even go up to around 150-160 Divines. Fail and you end up with a ring barely worth 1 Exalt.
    • Rough Market Price: Variable

These 4 items are currently the best ones we can recommend that you aim for when using the Orb of Chance in Path of Exile 2. Not only are these Uniques simply just game changing but, even if you won’t be personally using them, you can definitely score quite a bit of wealth with it in resale value.
