POCO X7 Pro Iron Man Edition Review | Geek Lifestyle
Iron Man is very much alive, all through the POCO X7 Pro.
POCO starts the year strong as they came out swinging with the newest installment to their premiere lineup, the POCO X7 Series. After quite the fabulous launch, and right off the heels of a decent gamer-centric device, we’re keen on seeing how they’ll take things to the next level. While a new “F7” smartphone has yet to make an appearance, their X series is alive and kicking–producing two variants with an additional special edition. The latter being the one in our possession.
The POCO X7 Pro Iron Man Edition is one beautiful conundrum. We’ll save our snarky, surface-level comments for later, for at the end of the day, it’s still a premium POCO device. Sporting the powerful new chipset, a sweet display, and a system that keeps this device “in the game” when it comes to mobile gaming, things couldn’t be more exciting for the new year.
The POCO series pedigree has its fair share of ups and downs, but it definitely maintains its place as a reliable roster of devices that kicks a lot of posterior across the board of price brackets. Will the new X7 Pro keep things professional in spite of its loud aesthetic, or is it a novelty taking a sad nosedive?
Read on to see if the Avengers Assembled, or got Thanos snapped.
Geeksthetic
The POCO X7 Pro Iron Man Edition comes in quite the elaborate package. Within the red box, we’re greeted by an arc reactor sim ejector tool laden within some nice cardboard artwork, flip it over and you get some sweet Iron Man schematics. Once you set it to the side, though, that’s when the magic happens. By that, I mean you get the phone itself.
The bottom hatch houses the box of accessories, which, sadly, has no charging brick. But you do get a nice charging cable and an even nicer protective case that adds even more to the Stark Industries look. Before slapping that sweet case on, we’re greeted to some nice Avengers Endgame Iron Man aesthetic, including a nice, matte black and red design, and some red trim along the cameras. A large Iron Man emblem lies smack in the middle of the backside–and it may look embossed, but it’s actually nice and flat–almost 3D-looking.
At 8.3mm thin and 198g heavy, it’s light enough to not feel unwieldy, but heavy enough to feel like it won’t break apart. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
After slapping on the protective shell, we get a better feel of its plastic and rubber design. Not exactly your usual TP case, as the sides are quite grippy thanks to the material. One downside is you’re basically exposed, sans the edges of the smartphone. You’re left vulnerable to hairline scratches, but the overall tech-internal design might just might be able to mask them well enough. It’s also nice that it also features some pop-up buttons instead of the usual punch holes on the side. Up front, we get the CrystalRes 1.5K 120Hz AMOLED display which we’ll be sampling more of later on.
Going back to protection, we’re getting a much better IP68 dust and water resistance this time around compared to the X6 Pro’s IP54. So, you need not worry about messier skirmishes–should they occur.
Binge-Watching Factor
Now, let’s get right to that sweet display–the 6.67″ CrystalRes 1.5K AMOLED display. With a very good 88.8% screen-to-body ratio, you’re getting some prime viweing real estate. If you so decide to do an MCU binge starting at Iron Man 2008, you’re golden. The 1220 x 2712 resolution will make sure that you stay hooked, as everything will appear crystal clear. I mean, the display IS CrystalRes after all.
The 120Hz refresh rate ensure you’ll be navigating through Jarvis–I mean, the POCO X7 Pro with ease. You need not worry if you’re being a bit too heavy-handed, because you have some top-tier Corning Gorilla Glass 7i protection. Unless you’re installing apps with a sledgehammer, you’re pretty much covered. Literally.
As for eye strain, most–if not all phones in the midrange come with some level of protection. The X7 Pro features some very helpful 1920Hz PWM dimming that keeps your eyes nice and blinking even more. Last, but not least, you get dual-firing stereo speakers that go up to 100–which is good enough. No cracking, no noise, just clear audio.
If you’re looking to binge your favorite anime–or of course, any MCU series, you won’t have any issue in this department.
Gaming Prowess
Here’s where the fun hits a fever pitch. We previously reviewed the POCO F6 and acknowledged its capabilities as a decent mobile gaming device. The X7 Pro kicks things into overdrive. If you enjoy playing the most demanding mobile titles out right now, you’re in for a treat. Also, given how new games come out every time we open our eyes, it’s best to be properly geared up.
First off, you’re now rocking a flagship-level Dimensity 8400-Ultra chipset that just puts any MOBA or mobile FPS to shame. Full ultra settings with uncapped FPS will be no issue, and you can compete to your heart’s content. If you’re a fan of older gacha titles, you can expect quicker loading times and improved graphics–especially if you’re upgrading from a much older device. Of course, if you’re a HoYo or Kuro connoisseur, you’re still getting some great gameplay.
By that, we mean lagless, smooth gameplay on high settings with motion blur turned off.
We decided to graduate from the usual Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail test bench to avoid a civil way. Instead, we pit Zenless Zone Zero and Wuthering Waves against each other in a fitting rivalry. The high-powered chipset coupled with 12 (+6 virtual) gigabytes of RAM guaranteed that our gameplay went smoothly. We even did a bit of multitasking with game guides, because it’s been many moons since our last deep dive into such story-driven gacha titles. However, if you do decide to have a variety of newfangled gacha games in your system, a hefty 512GB of storage won’t leave you disappointed–or suffering from FOMO.
Of course, those are the essential components to run a good game. What about the supplementary features that keep you IN the game? The POCO X7 Pro’s proprietary game engine works really well in keeping you locked in to your play sessions. Game Turbo gives you a variety of quality of life features that won’t necessarily ensure automatic victory, but make life a bit easier once you’re in for the long haul.
A feature worth getting hyped for is the LiquidCool Technology 4.0 that comes coupled with POCO 3D IceLoop System. There’s some intricate technology going on here, but in practice, our unit got, at most, warm to the touch after more than an hour of gameplay.
This is a great next step in competing with the more expensive gaming flagships in the market, as we all know, the POCO series isn’t ALL about gaming. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be a worthy contender.
Geek Photoshoot Capabilities
Previously, we got some fine cameras. They were good, but not mindblowing. This time around, they’re a bit more decent to handle. Instead of the usual triple-camera setup one would expect, POCO decided to stay the course and focus on what’s important: a good main shooter, and some decent ultrawide capabilities.
Good and decent are exactly what the 50 MP main camera and 8MP ultrawide are. Equipped with OIS, you’ll be getting some snazzy shots with some quick freehand action, no sweat. The ultrawide lens provides a large field of view that produces colors that don’t veer too far from the main shooter–which is always nice to see. You only get up to 2X lossless zoom, and it does get a bit blurry if you crank it up to 10X, but the main shooter provides some good photos nonetheless.
Colors come out nicely, albeit a bit brighter than expected. A firmware update will more than likely rectify this.
Since the main shooter is doing most of the heavy lifting, you’ll be shooting portraits with it, too. You’re limited to 26mm and 35mm in terms of range, and the bokeh comes out quite nicely. Sadly, like before, no watermarks in portrait or selfie shots.
The bokeh effect even finds its way into normal camera shots, which is a nice touch if you’re close enough to the subject. It might not be as appealing to anyone who wants zero blur under closer proximity.
You’re pretty much golden when it comes to casual photography. Should you decide to whip our the X7 pro and snap a shot, you’ll get some decent output.
As for selfies, you only get the 20MP default range for both normal and portrait shots. As for the selfie bokeh, technology treks on in its consistency when it comes to NOT consuming the subject in a swirl of blur. Decent shots for both settings.
As for video, you can shoot up to 4K/60 fps with the main camera, and 1080p/30fps up front. It’s not the best choice for vlogging purposes, but in spite of the lower quality of video, it didn’t turn out too shabbily.
All-in-all, the camera setup provides some decent features for casual, social media-centric photography.
Everyday Reliability
The POCO X7 Pro Recasted Robert Downey Jr. Edition is one heck of a daily driver. Aside from a massive 6,000 mAh battery, you also get Smart 90W HyperCharge. Now, since we didn’t get a proprietary charging brick, we had to use a spare one we had lying around. After about a day and a half of medium to heavy usage–including gaming, we were able to top back to 100% in about 40 minutes. That’s some really good longevity right there.
As for its interface, you’re rocking the sweet combo of Android 15 and HyperOS 2.0. We understand that the patented Xiaomi OS isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s user-friendly and intuitive enough to get the job done. This is especially important for anyone who’s looking to get the most out of their device’s productivity.
The aforementioned 12+6GB of RAM and 512GB of storage are an absolute boon for anyone who has too many files and apps to sift through on their day-to-day. While we’ve all but touted the X7 Pro as potential primary gaming device, it won’t let you down when it comes to delivering in the workplace, too.
Final Geek Lifestyle Verdict
The POCO X7 Pro Iron Man Edition brings a lot to the table. From its gaudy-yet-gorgeous design, to its brilliant display, to its more than capable gaming capabilities–you can’t go wrong. As a daily driver, you’re provided more than enough power to get through said day, and then some. While it doesn’t have the utmost best cameras in the market, it’s still a cut above some of its peers, and you can get away with some beautiful snaps–especially if you have an eye for photography.
If you’re a true-blue fan of good ol’ Tony, and just so happen to need a new doohickey straight out of Stark Industries, this is one for the books. If you’re not really into anything Marvel, but a long-standing POCO fan through the years, then this is the best time to upgrade from that Pocophone F1 that’s been keeping itself together through sheer willpower and duct tape.
It’s a more than worthy successor to the X6, and we’re glad to see them making all the grand leaps and bounds while still not forgetting to make some small improvements along the way. No corners were cut, nothing got left behind. Avengers assembled, Thanos snapped averted.
