With the game’s launch just over a month away, Ubisoft revealed that Japanese superstar Mackenyu has been cast in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Mackenyu should already be familiar to many people, especially anime fans. For those unfamiliar though, Mackenyu is a Japanese actor who is best known for playing Roronoa Zoro in Netflix’s live-action One Piece series. He has also played key roles in other live-action projects, including JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable, Knights of the Zodiac, and Dragons of Wonderhatch.

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Mackenyu portrays Gennojo, a charming individual who crosses paths with protagonists Naoe and Yasuke. As the game progresses, players will be able to recruit Gennojo in the Shinobi League to aid in Naoe and Yasuke’s fight.

For this role, Mackenyu will be doing both the Japanese and English voice over for Gennojo.

“I have fond memories of the franchise. I was in middle school when Assassin’s Creed first came out, and I remember my friends and I would gather at a friend’s house and take turns playing the game,” Mackenyu said. “When I heard that the new Assassin’s Creed game would be set in Japan, I knew that I needed to be part of this project.”

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Mac on March 20, 2025.
