Flex and fold. The HUAWEI Mate XT is a mammoth of a phone that will surely turn heads and start conversations.

At the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), HUAWEI unveiled their ultimate flex – the World’s First Trifold smartphone that magically transforms a 6.4″ device into a mammoth 10.2″ entertainment machine. The HUAWEI Mate XT is here and it is massive!

Both in size and stature, the HUAWEI Mate XT | Ultimate Design is the brand’s answer to all the naysayers who thought they’d fold under the pressure of International sanctions and growth roadblocks. While most foldables do have 3 screens (1 cover screen and 2 foldable OLED screen), HUAWEI was able to create a one sheet OLED display that seamlessly folds into either a 10.2″ (2232 x 3184) LTOP OLED triple screen display , a 7.9″ (2232 x 2048) dual screen, or a 6.4″ (2232 x 1008) handy smartphone.

We had a few hours with the unit during our trip to KL, Malaysia for the Global Launch of the HUAWEI Mate XT | Ultimate Design and other flagship devices from the brand and we’re more than bewildered with just how massive the unit is when unfolded at it’s fullest level.

Unfold the Classic

HUAWEI is once again reinvigorating an established category with the HUAWEI Mate XT. With a new three-screen setup, the HUAWEI XT harkens back to the first foldable the brand has ever produced, the HUAWEI Mate X. In the Mate X, HUAWEI utilizes one piece of foldable AMOLED display for the entire setup. While other foldable phones unfold like a book, the HUAWEI Mate X folds outwardly. The brand hasn’t utilized this after Mate X3, but they readily implemented that here. With the HUAWEI Mate XT you have both outward and book-type unfolding mechanisms working at the same time so that you can opt to open up a 6.4″ smartphone device into a larger 10.2″ entertainment beast.

Interestingly enough the HUAWEI Mate XT utilizes the brand’s proprietary Kunlun Glass Gen 2 for the foldable AMOLED’s protection. Aside from this this mammoth of a device has a superbly thin profile once unfolded. At just 3.6mm thin unfolded, the HUAWEI Mate XT is one of the slimmest foldables laid flat.

Optic-wise, the HUAWEI Mate XT has a decent set of cameras on the rear module. Starting with a 50MP f/1.4~4.0 Variable Aperture RYYB Camera w/ OIS, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera, and rounding with a  12MP f/3.4 5.5x periscope telephoto w/ OIS + LED flash, the HUAWEI Mate XT can shoot more than decent photos in various shooting mode. Because it has 3 sets of screens, you can prop it up as well as a kickstand of sorts for hands-free portrait photos.

For those wanting to still use the selfie cam, it does come with an 8MP f/2.2 front-facing camera. But really, why would you want to use that when you can take advantage of the monster rear camera all the time now.

Dedication to Craftsmanship

Did you know it took 22 hours and 78 steps just to create the outer ring on the HUAWEI Mate XT’s rear camera module? It’s this dedication to craftsmanship that tells the story of the device. Everything from the new and improved hinge, the 1 of 1 star diamond rings on the camera module, the vegan leather rear cover, down to the way they re-engineered the internal components so everything can run spectacularly smoothly.

The precision, engineering marvel, and meticulous designing and labor-intensive (almost couture-like) manufacturing that makes the HUAWEI Mate XT a cut above the rest. Going back to the camera module ring as an example: no two rings are the same. It’s these little details that puts this under the brand’s Ultimate Design umbrella. The obsession over the smallest details elevates the overall design and it shows when you first use the smartphone.

Aside from a really premium feel, because HUAWEI utilizes only one large flexible AMOLED screen, you can literally see the UI shift from single screen to dual to triple screen all within a smooth-flowing animation. Zero lag time switch from one screen to the next, and everything feels and looks intuitive.

It takes 22 days just to produce 1 of these.

Ultimate Tech Flex (for now)

With an innovative new screen display feature, new tech infused on the device, and a craftsmanship that’s akin to haute-couture, the HUAWEI Mate XT commands a premium from interested owners. At Eur 3499 per piece (or around Php 212,000++), the HUAWEI Mate XT is targeted towards individual that simply must have the very best of everything. It’s the type of device that will definitely turn heads and create conversations and if that’s your jam, then this is your device.

Command the boardroom and be the center of attention during intimate omakase gatherings as you suddenly transform a 6.4″ display smartphone into a gigantic 10.2″ tablet-like device.

One of the key use-cases for the HUAWEI Mate XT’s large screen offering is in the realm of gaming. Playing triple A games with a screen like this is heavenly, and you wouldn’t need to compromise on having a small area for buttons. The device also aut0-adjusts the aspect ratio so you get the best viewing screen possible.

Imagine whipping this big boy up during a friendly game of Genshin Impact, or PUBG Mobile, or heck, sure, Mobile Legends: Bang-Bang (the large screen makes it easier for you to roam around as Kimmy, trust us on this).

The HUAWEI Mate XT will be making its way to the Philippines very soon and we can’t wait to get our hands on one to conduct a full review.
