When superhero aesthetics meet cutting-edge mobile technology, you get something straight up marvelous, like the POCO X7 Pro Iron Man Edition. Hot off the heels of last year’s decent, yet less superhero-esque counterpart, this POCO X7 Pro version is clad in a sleek Marvel-inspired design and is totally geared to bring some quintessential Stark Industry grade performance to your mobile gaming experience.
See, we take anything labeled as a “gaming device” a bit more seriously than other gadgetry. We’re not too fond of how some would simply slap the “gaming” label on a device as marketing, only for said device to immediately combust and cease to exist once you crank the settings above “medium.” Last year’s POCO F6 wasn’t exactly a gamechanger, but provided a nice, serviceable gaming experience. Can Iron Man trick things out like he always does, and level up your game? We shall see.
Also, just in case you were wondering, no. Tony Stark didn’t build this in a cave–with a box of scraps. We sure wish he did, though. That would’ve been really cool.
J.A.R.V.I.S who?
The POCO X7 Pro comes packed with a new MediaTek Dimensity 8400 Ultra processor, coupled with a Mali-G720 MC7 GPU. We did touch base on this in our review, but now that we’re focusing solely on gaming, we can let our nerd flag fly a bit.
Our review unit came with 12+6GB RAM and a massive 512GB storage. While you can’t exactly unleash the full potential of the expanded RAM during gaming, the base 12GB is good enough to handle any title you throw at it–and believe us when we say, we threw the latest demanding games including the kitchen sink.
We put the device through the wringer with the newest titles–namely Zenless Zone Zero, Wuthering Waves, and–well, Goddess of Victory: NIKKE. Yes, it’s new, and now, don’t judge. Save for ZZZ, which was set at Medium with 60 FPS due to a bit of lag, the rest were cranked out to Maximum–even after receiving a fair warning for overclocking.
It’s safe to say that our expectations were met, and even exceeded a tad. ZZZ’s frame drops were understandable, as once the action reaches a fever pitch, you literally can’t see anything on-screen. The same would happen on higher-end devices, if we were to max out all the settings. Keeping things at a steady Medium + 60 FPS guaranteed no jitters, stutters, ifs, buts, or coconuts.
Wuthering Waves was even more surprising, as it featured an open world with just as much graphical demand as your typical HoYo title. Chalking it up to better optimization, we had a grand time completing the latest patch while failing to acquire Carlotta. It was still a fun hour of gameplay–seamless, and throttle-free.
Your girls over at NIKKE were bouncy as usual–but the main crux of this game is its loading screens. You can definitely play it on lower-end devices, but you’ll be punished with 10 to 15 second loading screens. As for the X7 Pro, well, that was never the case.
Game Turbo is your own personal assistant, making sure you can game uninterrupted–both by notifications and unnecessary apps. Toggling it is easy, and it really stays out of your way for the most part. It rounds up your experience quite nicely.
Maximum Pulse
Of course, we need to mention that sweet display, yoo. The 6.67″ CrystalRes 1.5K Flow AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate provided a nice combo to a really good chipset. Your gameplay is only as smooth as you perceive it, and given the POCO X7 Pro’s screen, that perception is reality.
You can really see that 60 FPS kick in, and the colors just pop with every frame of animation. It’s especially great when you don’t have any frame drops or screen-tearing in your gameplay. If you get tired and choose to watch a few guides to kill time, then you can do so in sweet 1080p. You really won’t have any problems watching just about anything on this screen.
A literal Arc Reactor
Now, a bit more of those internals. A chipset can only do so much, and it’s mandatory that it synergizes well with everything else. Just like Iron Man and The Avengers–or not. Maybe sometimes. You can never tell if you follow both the comics and the MCU.
The new MediaTek Dimensity 8400 Ultra might not be the most popular kid on the block–being overshadowed by its overpowered 9400 counterpart. Still, just being a nanometer thicker, and with a good amount of power, it holds its own when it comes to being optimized both in terms of thermals and battery.
We had absolutely no problems running and gunning for a good few hours while staying only relatively warm, thanks to some great thermals via LiquidCool Technology 4.0. There was never any risk of reaching cosmic levels of overheating, even after three straight hours of gameplay, which drained our power quite a bit–but only a bit.
The 6000mAh battery with 90W HyperCharge truly came in clutch. After dropping to just under 70% after three straight hours of gacha gaming, we were able to bounce back in a fraction of the time. Even more so during our full review, where we daily driver-ed this device and managed to always keep it above half capacity each day. You won’t be running out of juice anytime soon–if you do have a charging brick, which this phone does not.
Arguably, the only bummer in an otherwise jampacked deal, if we’re being completely honest. Not a dealbreaker, but it would have been nice.
A very timely recasting
While we did hype up the Iron Man Edition, it breaks our heart to say that it’s currently our of stock. Yes, the hype was indeed real, and it flew off the shelves in less than a month, so it seems. However, as if destined by the MCU itself, Robert Downey Jr. was recently recast as good ol’ Doctor Doom. What color is Doctor Doom? Green. What’s so important about green? Well, that just so happens to be one of the X7 Pro’s colorways.
So, you can snag your very own POCO X7 Pro (unofficial) Doctor Doom Edition right now starting at PHP 16,999 via Shopee or your local retailer. Guaranteed, it still has all the aforementioned gaming prowess, minus the Marvel-ous aesthetic. Still, leave a sliver of hope that just like any superhero, the Iron Man Edition just might come back. For now, though. You can hate on Reed Richards with the base variant.
