We saw plenty of announcements at AnimeJapan 2025, among these being the first full trailer for City the Animation, an upcoming series by Kyoto Animation.

This new trailer gives us a nice taste of what to expect as it features some funny clips of the series’ cast. Plus, it highlights the show’s voice cast and cute art style.

Check out the trailer here:

If the series’ visuals look familiar, that’s because this anime is based on the City manga by Keiichi Arawi, the creator of Nichijou. As that series’ anime adaptation was made by Kyoto Animation, you can think of City as the successor to Nichijou, even though it’s not exactly a sequel.

Even though they’re not connected story-wise, City should be a must-watch for Nichijou fans as it also promises to deliver a similar combination of slice-of-life and surreal comedy.

The series’ premise is described as:

From the creator of nichijou, this surreal-slapstick series revolves around a penniless college student, Midori Nagumo, who lives in an ordinary city filled with not-quite-ordinary people. And as this reckless girl runs about, she sets the city in motion.

Midori is in a bit of a bind. She is in debt, and her landlady is trying to shake her down for unpaid rent. Her best friend refuses to loan her cash since she’s wised up to her tricks.

Maybe some bullying would help. Or a bit of petty theft? Neither is sustainable. Maybe getting a job would settle things… But working means less time for fun adventures in the big city…

Meanwhile, its voice cast includes:

  • Mikako Komatsu as Midori Nagumo
  • Aki Toyosaki as Niikura
  • Yui Ishikawa as Wako Izumi
  • Yoshihisa Kawahara as Tsurubishi Makabe
  • Miyu Irino as Tatewaku Makabe
  • Ayaka Nanase as Matsuri Makabe
  • Azusa Tadokoro as Eri Amakazari
  • Yu Wakui as Riko Izumi
  • Takehito Koyasu as Dr. Adatara/Adatara’s father
  • Mayumi Asano as Adatara’s mother
  • KENN as Tatsuta Adatara
  • Satoshi Inomata as Ryōta Adatara
  • Coco Hayashi as Kamome Adatara
  • Haruna Fukushima as Umi Adatara
  • Yuki Tenma as Sora Adatara

City the Animation will premiere on July 7, 2025. For now, there’s no word yet on a streaming platform partner outside Japan. Hopefully, a streaming platform like Crunchyroll or Netflix picks it up as it’s a promising comedy series.
