CS: Legacy has just been revealed, and it’s a complete remake of Counter-Strike 1.6, making it an intriguing new project for long-time CS fans.

This new project was revealed with a trailer that showcases gameplay footage that looks like the classic CS 1.6 but with a fresh coat of paint.

Note that this is not an official Valve remake. Instead, it’s a fan-made project, though it’s built on Valve’s official 2013 Source Engine SDK codebase. In that sense, the game is reminiscent of Black Mesa, the fan-made Half-Life remake, though that game got approval for a commercial release from Valve.

This project is being made not just by a random group of fans though. Instead, CS: Legacy is being developed by the developers of CSPromod. Given this, many long-time fans have high hopes for this remake based on its reception online.

Legacy is described by its developers as:

CS:Legacy is a fully standalone remake of Counter-Strike 1.6, built from the ground up with 100% custom game code and game assets. After the exciting Global Offensive transition to CS2, we wanted to bring Classic Counter-Strike back to life more than ever to keep the Classic CS Legacy alive. Not as a mod, but as a full game. The game is built on Valve’s official 2013 Source Engine SDK codebase, with our own major rewrites to the renderer, shaders and various systems.

For now, there’s no word yet on a release date. As it’s a fan-made work, it’s likely that it will take a while before this remake gets launched. Still, the trailer seems to indicate that there has been significant progress, so we might just see the game get at least an Alpha release soon.

Given that Counter-Strike 2 is still routinely the most-played game on Steam, it’s likely that this remake will generated a lot of interest for those who grew up playing 1.6. Of course, as Counter-Strike 2 is still hugely popular, Valve likely won’t make this game official as it did with Black Mesa. Still, it’ll be interesting to see if Valve makes a move on Legacy, especially given that the Classic Offensive project was retired by Valve (though that’s a more complicated issue).
